Ontario cut the repayment window after an eviction notice to seven days from 14, letting landlords seek eviction sooner over unpaid rent.
Tenants who want to raise unit problems at an eviction hearing now must pay ~half the rent allegedly owed before those issues can be heard.
Other Ontario Rule Changes
Persistent late payment: >7 days late on 3 occasions in 6 mo
Personal-use eviction: 120 days' notice, no compensation or alternate unit
Occupant must move in within 60 days or bad faith is presumed
Officials said the changes targeted board delays, but a tribunal spokesperson expected no effect on caseload or processing times for Ontario applications.
Some landlord and tenant advocates expected the shorter deadline and separate filings to create more hearings and added backlogs, not faster resolutions.
